Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to offer an intellectually challenging and supportive environment which allows you to develop your research and communication skills in the context of undertaking a research project of your choice.

 

 

Course Learning Outcomes

CLO1. Explain the principles of research design, research ethics and their implications.

CLO2. Apply a range of techniques and tools, including, but not limited to: qualitative methods, quantitative methods, and mixed methods

CLO3. Design and implement research of high-quality standards.

CLO4. Evaluate and critique research work in order to identify where methodological principles could be improved including the written presentation of the review to a professional standard.

Research methods in computer science: Types of research, basic research, applied research; quantitative research, experimental, descriptive, correlational; Qualitative research; Collaborative research, action research; Hybrid research; design science research;
Research process: Problem identification and definition; literature review; Conceptualization of Solutions for Research Problems; conceptual design, conceptual architecture, conceptual model/framework; Selecting a research method; data analysis; research reporting;
Ethical issues in computer science research: Principles of ethical research; informed consent; privacy and confidentiality; ethics in publishing;  institutional review boards and ethical review;
Research writing: citation  and referencing; writing a research proposal; scientific writing and reporting; technical papers, journal articles, white papers, thesis report, conference papers, policy briefs, position papers
