Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to equip educators, learners, and education stakeholders with the knowledge and skills to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in teaching and learning responsibly and ethically. The course emphasizes understanding AI’s potential benefits, addressing challenges such as bias, privacy, and academic integrity, and fostering equitable, transparent, and human-centered applications of AI in education. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to make informed decisions that balance innovation with ethical responsibility.

 

 

Course Learning Outcomes

CLO1. Explain the key ethical principles that should guide the integration of AI in educational settings.

CLO2. Analyze real-world scenarios involving the integration of AI in education and identify potential ethical dilemmas or challenges related to issues such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the impact on human agency and autonomy.

CLO3. Apply ethical frameworks to analyze and evaluate the appropriateness of specific AI-powered educational technologies or practices.

CLO4. Evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of different ethical frameworks in guiding the design, implementation, and oversight of AI-powered educational technologies.


 

Course Content

This course provides an Overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologiesused in education, covering potential benefits and challenges of AI integration. It includes an introduction to ethical considerations in AI education, including ethical frameworks and theories such as utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics, with a focus on applying these frameworks to AI integration in education. There will be a discussion on the limitations and strengths of different ethical perspectives. 


Privacy and Data Protection will be addressed by emphasizing the importance of privacy in educational settings, examining data collection and storage practices in AI-driven education, and discussing ethical considerations surrounding student data privacy and consent. 

Accountability and Transparency are also key topics, highlighting the ethical responsibilities of developers, educators, and policymakers in AI education, as well as accountability mechanisms for AI-driven educational systems. 

Equity and Accessibility will be examined, addressing equity issues in AI education and ensuring accessibility for all students in AI-driven learning environments, along with ethical considerations in bridging the digital divide through AI integration. 

Intellectual Property and Copyright will cover Intellectual property rights in AI-generated content, exploring the ethical use of AI tools for content creation and distribution, as well as balancing innovation with respect for intellectual property rights in education. 

The course will also focus on Ethical Decision-Making in AI Integration, presenting ethical decision-making frameworks in educational contexts through case studies and group discussions on ethical dilemmas in AI integration, and strategies for fostering ethical AI practices in educational institutions. 

Finally, Emerging Ethical Issues will be explored, addressing emerging ethical challenges in AI education, ethical considerations in using emerging AI technologies (e.g., virtual reality, adaptive learning systems), and future trends and implications for ethical AI integration in education.
